About me

Predominately I use two contrasting clays - Porcelain and Crank stoneware. With this series focussing on simple forms of cylinders, bowls and eggs shapes.

With the cylinders I explore how they can be manipulated in an organic way by pushing them to create bends and folds, evoking folds of fabric, while still retaining a functional purpose. The central etched lines highlight the curves of the form. The porcelain is refined to a smooth sanded tactile finish, while with the crank I show the rough natural texture of the clay. Applying the copper oxide to the lines contrasts with the clay body and once again highlights the folds.

The egg forms are made to a very fine thickness to evoke the fragility of eggshells; the porcelain lends itself to these pieces beautifully. I push these pieces to a non-uniform shape so each one is different. The copper oxide is burnt into the edges so it seems like burnt paper; I often flick the oxide into the forms producing interesting patterns.

The bowls bring the cylinders and eggs together. I craft them to have the same fragility of the eggshell pieces, while bending them as I do the cylinders.

I am fascinated by how the two different clays can bring such contrasting finished pieces to life while being the same in form.
